How to live well was a central question for ancient Greco-Roman philosophers. The respective schools of philosophy, including Stoicism, Plato's Academy, and Epicureanism (among many others), aimed to help people live better. It was not navel-gazing from an ivory tower but rather ordinary people talking about the daily dilemma's they encountered and how to address them. In this form, the question of "how to live" can best be understood as, "Should I quit my job?" Or "Should I break up with my spouse?" Or, even more simply, "should I hit snooze?"
These questions, simple as they might seem, are not. My name is Craig and I am a psychotherapist at Shoreline Counselling but I prefer to be understood as a philosopher. I believe most people seeking therapy today would have sought support from these ancient schools of philosophy in Ancient Greece or Rome. The lessons are timeless and have profoundly influenced modern therapy today. One difference, however, is modern psychotherapy tends to focus on curing our psychological ailments. Whereas philosophy focuses on Eudaimonia: living well with meaning, purpose, and serenity. If you would like to learn more, please join me for this free session!
